Somerville's first urban farm grows healthy and affordable produce for low-income families in the community. South Street Farm was designed and built by Groundwork Somerville's youth jobs training and employment program; since 2011, Groundwork Somerville and community volunteers have transformed two barren, paved parking lots into an abundant vegetable garden and pollinator habitat. Features include a solar-powered rain-harvesting system, re-purposed curbstones as growing fields, cider press, composting, honey bees and pollinator hotels, and a passive-heated greenhouse in the works.
Planting, painting, cleaning, and greening activities will be offered as well as tours and stories. In addition, informative tours of the two farm lots will tell people about the site's history, development and role in the community.
