June 18th  10:30 am (approximately 30 minutes)

City Square Park (Park Street side)

See how landscape architects at Halvorson Design Partnership and sculptor David Philips transformed this urban intersection into a one-acre oasis. On the site of Charlestown’s historic Market Square, originally laid out in 1629 and reclaimed during the Big Dig, which replaced congested traffic and elevated roadways with underground highways. Charlestown’s rich history as a fishing village, the start of Paul Revere’s ride and the first judiciary in Massachusetts is represented in sculpture, graphic panels and monuments. Today it serves as a Charlestown gateway, filled with more than 70 varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers, cared for by the community and Friends of City Square Park.
