Mission Hill

Please note the additional event on June 24th

The importance of institutions in this neighborhood begins with the name. Built on Parker Hill, the area became known as “Mission Hill” after a 19th-century institution: the Mission Church complex. Although mostly residences, a full quarter of the neighborhood is occupied by the Longwood Medical Area (LMA), home to healthcare, research, education and cultural institutions—21 in all, including Common Boston sponsor Massachusetts College of Art and Design. It has Boston’s largest concentration of jobs outside the Financial District, with more than 52,000 people working or studying on a typical weekday. Although the residential population is just 18,722, the neighborhood has been solidified and expanded over the last 30 years, thanks to the effort of community groups such as Roxbury Tenants of Harvard and Mission Main Tenant Task Force. Come celebrate the efforts of Mission Hill’s residents, explore the LMA’s world-class institutions and look carefully at the boundaries and connections between all those who make this one of Boston’s most racially and economically diverse neighborhoods.
